We Are Proud Sponsors of Redbridge College, London!
It always feels great to ‘give something back’, so when we were approached as potential sponsors for Redbridge College Student Achievement Awards, we were delighted to have the opportunity.
Redbridge is a vocational college with a mission ‘to inspire, develop and provide the opportunity for all Redbridge College students and staff to succeed.’ And part of this means recognising when their students have achieved something special.
At Outdoor Advertising UK Ltd, we like that focus! It fits well with our own mission to provide the opportunity for our own customers to succeed, so of course, we said yes.
There are a variety of business supporters, ranging from educational institutions to providers of learning materials, and of course – us!
The 2017 event was hosted in the college ’s new Box Theatre, a modern performing arts venue at the Chadwell Heath campus, where winning students took to the stage to collect awards presented by a host of inspiring guests – from business leaders through to sportsmen and women – it was a fantastic night.
NHS Health Awareness Goes Outside
Health – it’s always in the limelight, but it’s VERY topical at the moment, as the country hurtles towards an obesity epidemic. Combine this with an ageing population, and it’s a recipe for disaster that the government and future governments are hyper-aware of.
A healthy population means less cost to the NHS, so no wonder that wherever we turn, we’re bombarded with messages. Child obesity is a major problem, so there are proposals to ban junk food advertising before 9 pm. There’s a new sugar tax on the horizon – so manufacturers are changing their recipes to conform – all with the aim of weaning people away from the highly-addictive drinks they manufacture.
We’re also told we should exercise regularly – there are campaigns to get people walking, running, cycling and going to the gym. There are campaigns for loneliness (a huge killer in the UK), smoking, alcohol abuse, the future of the NHS, breastfeeding, and misuse of the A&E departments. And we’re happy to say, that much of these campaigns are via billboards, often in conjunction with Outdoor Advertising Ltd.
Changing Behaviour
It’s all about encouraging a change in behaviour, and direct communications like outdoor advertising, are seen as a vital and strategic tool in order to do this. If it’s a public message, then where better to place it than a public space!
Cambridge NHS
This is one health trust that has recently been working with Outdoor Advertising Ltd to get across the message about the importance of regular health checks. The campaign has been running for the Cambridge NHS and they wanted to let the community know of free health checks for those between 40 and 74 years of age.
They used bus stop advertising to promote a FREE NHS health check that can give the community peace of mind on their health.
The message was that people may be perfectly healthy inside and out, but if they are at risk of developing conditions like diabetes and heart disease in the future, they could find out how to make a difference and lower that risk.
Following the NHS health check, they would be able to get help and support from friendly, local health professionals.
Bus stop advertising carried this message perfectly to the community that Cambridge NHS were trying to reach.
Truck Advertising Gets Your Message Going Further
At Outdoor Advertising, we know that target audiences don’t stay still, they commute to work, and they drive to meetings etc. The UK’s major road network they use to do this is currently very hard to reach with traditional billboards, so one very effective way to reach those drivers is to take your advertising on the same roads they drive, by truck!
The incredible reach and recall associated with truck advertising makes truck advertising not only one of the most impactful mediums available but also the most cost-effective. As the advertising reaches the general public on a mass scale, each trailer will be seen by over 55,000 motorists on a daily basis. That averages out at just 75p per thousand people reached!
This flexible medium can be used to target the UK as a whole, or a region, or along a specific route in some circumstances. We have even been asked to launch international campaigns.
We’re proud to offer a wide range of different truck advertising formats, giving our clients control over how their message reaches their audiences.
From a fully-wrapped truck (putting your adverts on both sides and the rear ), through to one or both sides giving you a huge branding space equivalent to a 96 sheet billboard.
You can even just have the rear doors, which is one of our most popular budget options due to the opportunity for longer copy thanks to its incredible average dwell time of 48 seconds.
Truck advertising is one of the most overlooked outdoor advertising mediums as most people aren’t aware that it is even an option. However, they are keen to get their campaign on the road once they hear about the benefits of reaching a mobile, yet highly receptive audience.

Using Bus Advertising For Educational Establishments
When the coalition government introduced the annual university fee of £9k in 2012, it’s widely believed there was a large drop in applications to universities. However, in a follow-up report from UCAS, this demonstrated the drop was, in fact, only 1%, with an actual increase in ‘the proportion of 18-year-olds in the population who apply to university – by a whopping 37%!’
In real terms, that means there’s a wealth of choice and opportunity for applicants, so the competition for educational establishments to attract interest is actually fiercer than ever.
So how do you ‘up the game’ and get people through your doors?
One of the strategies we’d suggest is proven to be effective in this field, and it’s that of bus advertising.
Bus Advertising In The UK
Advertising comes in many forms – all of which have the potential to help your brand raise its profile. Our observations on the effectiveness of bus advertising are based on our own experience, and also the results of varying surveys, which show consistently increased applications to educational establishments on the back of these campaigns.
Bus Advertising Formats
Standard bus formats include Lower Rears, Mega Rears, T-Sides, and Super Sides, depending on your needs. A campaign could include a variety of formats or just one – whatever’s right for you.
Why Choose Bus Advertising For Your College, School or Uni?
Buses are mobile. They go places, and they’re read – whether you’re walking by, or sitting behind one in the car – you can’t miss the message.
You can choose the Depot that best covers the areas to seek out your ideal consumer, and of course, because buses do the same routes over and over within those areas, the message is re-enforced ( and don’t forget, because of their height, the advertising isn’t obstructed.)

The Most Iconic Billboards Of All Time
Outdoor advertising is everywhere, but in its largest form, the ‘Billboard’ is the most eye-catching. It’s a science and an art, but whilst advertising campaigns come and go – some have an impact that stays long after the posters come down. What is it that makes them stand out?
The most iconic of them all – ‘Hello Boys!’ (1994)
When Eva Herzigova greeted male drivers with the iconic ‘Hello Boys’ in her billboard ads back in 1994, it not only propelled her to stardom but thousands of motorists into a frenzy.
Blamed for causing both high temperatures and countless accidents, the ad was voted the most ‘iconic’ of the past few decades, in a poll by the outdoor advertising trade body, the Outdoor Media Centre.
Whilst feminists were up in arms, calling the advert ‘degrading’, other women were rushing to the stores in their millions, revitalising their love lives and Wonderbra’s profits, whilst the campaign remains one of the most influential in the history of advertising.
Political Comment – ‘Labour Isn’t Working’ (1979)
The second-place vote went to the ‘Labour Isn’t Working’ campaign, which was credited as a major factor in Margaret Thatcher’s rise to power in the 1979 General Election. Saatchi and Saatchi were the agency behind the campaign, focusing on unemployment and depicting a dole queue.
1914 War Recruitment Poster – Lord Kitchener Wants You
The sign of a great piece of work is when it’s not only remembered but emulated. There may not be many people alive today who remember the original, but we’re all familiar with the iconic image – now adorning everything from posters through to China and tea towels.
His Master’s Voice (The Gramophone Company, 1901)
The trademark image comes from a painting by English artist Francis Barraud. Acquired from the artist in 1899 by the newly formed Gramophone Company, the image showed the dog ‘Nipper’ depicted as he listened to recordings of his deceased owner’s voice. The company became known as HMV (his master’s voice) – and the logo and the motto were used and translated worldwide.
Management trainee aged 42 (The Economist, 1991)
More of a subtle approach, but when you get it – it hits home. He’s a management trainee. He’s 42. And he doesn’t read ‘The Economist’. And that’s why he’s where he is…. It’s succinct and brilliant!
Others in the top 10:
Pregnant Man (The Health Education Council, 1969)
Araldite (Ciba Geigy, 1983)
Think Different (Apple, 2003)
Beanz Meanz Heinz (Heinz, 1966)
Dumb Animals (Greenpeace, 1984)
The above examples show that a great campaign requires creativity, planning and excellent siting. We’d be happy to help you discuss your next one.
